The legacy of the Hobmans of Greytown commenced in the 1860s when a young Luke Hobman, orphaned and alone, settled in the newly established Wairarapa town. In 1863 he married Ann Marie Hall, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hall, recent arrivals from Suffolk, UK and raised a family of 12 children, before his untimely death in 1890 at 48 years.
